Hello! Intro Post!

Hi! Welcome to my blog! I'm a freshman living on East this year and I'm loving it! I'm hoping to double major in Math and International Comparative Studies and I'm excited to be taking Writing 101 Decoding Disney this semester because I'm such a Disney Fan!

My favorite Disney movie is Frozen 2, and my favorite character is Elsa! This is probably because I was so inspired by the most powerful character in the movie not having her entire story based around a romance. While classic romance stories are fun once in a while, I love that the story was centered around Elsa finding out who she is and the extent of her power. As a queer woman, it was wonderful to watch a main and popular Disney character not have her main story center around the man she is dating.

I have been a Disney fan my entire life! I even got my first ever haircut at Disney! Being at Disney World one of my most common childhood memories because I used to go every year, so I'm super excited to analyze the movies and stories. I'm excited to explore more of the nuances of the stories instead of just the surface level stories. This semester will be a lot of fun:).

  1. Hi Katy, I'm so excited to get to know you! I wholeheartedly agree with your points on "Frozen"— it's so powerful that Elsa doesn't necessarily have a storyline based entirely on finding a Prince Charming. While enjoyable, plenty of Disney movies have perpetuated heteronormative, misogynistic narratives around womanhood, and "Frozen," while not ground-breaking, was a great break from that.

  2. Hi Katy! Welcome! :)
I love that you got your first haircut at Disney World! Did you get it at the barber shop on Main Street?! My husband was able to luck into one there and it was just a cool experience for him. :)
Having seen Frozen II, how do you feel about the fan theories that Elsa herself is a queer character? And that the reason (1) Honeymaren was introduced and (2) Elsa "abdicates" the throne to be an (epic, powerful) goddess is to open the door for a queer relationship in an as-of-now hypothetical Frozen III?

    1. Yes I did get my first haircut there! There are a ton of pictures of me just absolutely covered in stickers having the time of my life!

I LOVE the fan theories that Elsa is queer and I would love to see her end up with Honeymaren, however I'm a little skeptical about Disney doing that, as they are a bit reserved on even making a lot of Princesses of color or making statements with their characters at all, which is unfortunate. I think them leaving it ambiguous is a great first step! I would totally be in favor of a queer main character in such a big corporation because representation is so important!

  3. Hi Katy, excited to have you in my squad pod! As someone who used to go to Orlando 5-6 times a year for swimming, I have always felt an aura of happiness radiating from Disney World whenever I drove past it, and although I have only been to the park once, it is definitely one of my favorite parks of all time.

I actually haven't watched any of the Frozen movies yet, but since they're on the watch list for this course, I'm excited to see what all the hype is about!

Frozen II vs. Frozen!

Frozen and Frozen II both presented unique stories that, while in a fantasy world, resonated with many children in their messages. However...
